We have provided Treetops Hospice with vital support as they carried out essential repairs to their charity shop, located in Sandiacre, Derbyshire to ensure the building is fit for purpose.
We supported the local charity with advice, expertise and management, including costing advice and sourced competitive quotations from local sub-contractors to help Treetops with their budget planning, and carried out programming and health and safety planning to ensure works could be delivered safely while the shop and on-site offices remained open.
Treetops appointed local sub-contractors to conduct the works which included plastering repairs, roof insulation, installation of a new shopfront window, timber flooring repairs, a new door to the rear of the building, re-rendering of external walls and various pointing repairs to the chimney, external and perimeter walls.
The repair took place over 12 weeks and were overseen by one of our Site Managers who ensured compliance with the programme, health and safety and quality standards. This enabled the shop to remain open throughout (only closing for one day to allow the safe installation of the new shopfront window), allowing them to continue trading and receiving donations with the least amount of disruption to staff, volunteers and shoppers.
Our support for the Sandiacre shop refurbishment has generated an impressive £92,450 in social value, through:
It was delivered as a continuation of our successful Local Communities Partnership Programme which was launched in 2021 and saw Treetops Hospice selected as our chosen local charity.
In addition to the vital work on the shop in Sandiacre, the partnership has provided professional services, designs and budget advice for improvements to Treetops’ grounds and working areas at their main hospice site in Risley.
The LCPP is our initiative delivered as part of SCAPE’s Regional Construction framework to magnify social value impacts through collaboration with framework partners Arc Partnership and Perfect Circle. Overall, during the year-long partnership with the hospice, we have provided over 325 hours of time and expertise, equating to a value of services of £54,000. Vanessa Beadsworth, shop manager at Treetops Hospice, said: “The shop had needed repairs for some time – particularly when it came to areas that were prone to leaks, which risked damaging stock, impacting on opening hours or disrupting the customer experience. It is wonderful that the building is now completely watertight.
“The new door to the rear has also improved access for deliveries and recycling collections, minimising impact on staff, volunteers and shoppers.
“We are hugely grateful to G F Tomlinson and their team for coordinating the project and ensuring that interruption to our trading and opening times was kept to the bare minimum. “The building looks fantastic now and we’re so pleased to be able to welcome customers to what feels like a completely new shop!”

Chris Flint, managing director at G F Tomlinson, said: “Charity shops exist to raise vital funds for the hospice, increase awareness of their services among the community and provide an important resource for local residents. It is important to help Treetops maintain these buildings so they can continue trading and provide staff, volunteers and customers with a safe and comfortable environment.
“The Sandiacre shop is located in a busy area of the town and is clearly well-loved and well supported by the community. Thanks to initiatives like our Local Communities Partnership Programme, we are able to help deliver vital projects like this which make a real difference to the lives of local people.
“We are proud of our continuing partnership with Treetops Hospice and everything we have achieved for them with our partners, Arc Partnership and Perfect Circle, and our supply chain.”
