GREEN-FINGERED pupils at Sunnyside Spencer Academy in Beeston have worked with G F Tomlinson to create a colourful garden area to complement their new school building.
The school’s ‘Eco Club’ filled an area near the entrance with plants during a curriculum activity led by the contractors as part of their work on site to deliver a £2.6m new school building and playing fields.
Headteacher Shamara Wilson said: “The new building is fantastic, and has already had a positive impact on children and staff. The children are so proud of their new environment, and having more space for resources has helped teaching and learning throughout the school.
“Our Eco Club thoroughly enjoyed taking on the challenge of creating our new garden area, which is a real talking points for visitors to the grounds.
“As part of The Spencer Academies Trust, our school now sets a standard among the trust and we’re able to host our colleagues in other schools for professional development training.”
The new building includes a reception, school hall and kitchen as well as eight new classrooms. The old school building was then demolished to create playing fields with football pitches and running tracks.
G F Tomlinson site manager, said: “This is just one example of many education projects we have completed where the school remained occupied during the works.
“This is something we have a lot of experience in at G F Tomlinson, and it was a great opportunity to teach pupils about the importance of health and safety on a live site and give them a chance to find out more about the construction process.
“Working with the school’s Eco Club was also rewarding, and we’re proud to have helped include pupils in the delivery of their new school. The garden area looks fantastic and is a great addition to the site.
“We’re delighted that the teachers and pupils are so pleased with their new building. I’m confident this new learning environment will have a lasting impact on pupils for many years to come.”
Sunnyside Spencer Academy School is one of four schools that G F Tomlinson has built through ESFA (Education and Skills Funding Agency) framework. The new facility is part of the government’s national £4.4 billion Priority School Building Programme, which is rebuilding or refurbishing schools in the worst condition across the country.
