G F TOMLINSON DIGS DEEP TO HELP COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS

G F Tomlinson has kick-started a community project at Ashbourne Road District Allotments Association (ARDAA) to transform a disused plot into a dedicated area for people with disabilities, or recovering from illness.

G F Tomlinson donated a team of three experts and a mini digger from Total Hire and Sales to remove concrete foundations from a former greenhouse and level the ground on the 25×5 metre plot.

Julia Slater, plot holder and volunteer group leader said the project would not have been possible without the support of G F Tomlinson.

“Our 9-acre allotments are undergoing a major revamp as part of our centenary celebrations; creating a plot that is accessible to all people is a key part of that.

“Before the generous support of the site team the plot was completely unusable because of the remainder of a large concrete base left over from a greenhouse. Now we want to ensure that people with disabilities, anyone recovering from long-term health conditions or those who cannot have a plot of their own can enjoy our facilities.

“We also want to create a space where schools can come and visit to learn about growing seeds and planting vegetables. We’re planning an edible pallet wall which will be filled with strawberries, salads and tomatoes once the plot is complete in September. We can’t thank G F Tomlinson enough for their support and look forward to revealing the finished plot to the team later in the year.”

Kevin Dodds, operations manager at G F Tomlinson, met with ARDAA during a Derby Dragons Den event organised by Business in the Community where local charities and community groups ‘pitch’ for help from local businesses.

Kevin said: “We’re proud to have been able to support ARDAA with this project and help them celebrate a fantastic 100 years.

“As a Derby business, giving back to the local community is at the heart of our ethos, and I’m confident that the new garden area will be enjoyed by allotment plot holders and visitors for many years to come.”

Local firms Total Hire, Browns Builders Merchants and Harlow Brothers also offered a helping hand with the donation of equipment hire and building materials.

This project is just one of the many ways in which G F Tomlinson supports local charities.
