G F Tomlinson returns to profit

Building and civil engineering group GF Tomlinson has returned to profit during a year when sales surged closer to the £100m mark.

The Derby-headquartered company, which has a base in Birmingham, said it has approached this year with “positive anticipation” thanks to the continued upturn of the UK’s construction industry.

In the year to 31 December 2013, GF Tomlinson Group posted a turnover of £95.9m, up from £73.5m in 2012.

It also stemmed two consecutive years of losses, with the company reporting a pre-tax profit of £213,266. A year earlier it had made a loss of £3.6m.

Writing in its annual report, the group’s directors said the closure of its GF Tomlinson Birmingham subsidiary allowed it to “re-orientate and concentrate” its activities. This division had been primarily responsible for the losses in 2012.

But the directors praised the performance of its building arm, saying its £2.1m profit was an “exceptional performance during what was a very depressed year for most construction related businesses”.

“Although it was often a period of difficult trading we always continued with our ‘can do’ and ‘will do’ approach to work and a flexible approach to all our client’s needs,” they added.

“The training that we have given to our staff over the period stood us in good stead and our continued investment in training continues to show a positive result.”

GF Tomlinson’s directors added the building division “continues to make its mark in the marketplace” and has £38m of work in hand for 2014, with a projected full-year turnover of £66m.

Barry Sewards, GF Tomlinson’s chairman, said: “As predicted previously, the group has returned back to profitability.

“Market conditions are more favourable and we are receiving a good level of repeat business as well as attracting new clients. We are confident we will consolidate this growth into the future.”

The business was formed in 1892 by George F Tomlinson and works across the Midlands.
