A GROWING village in Leicestershire is celebrating after a community project years in the planning has now started on site.
Members from Scraptoft Parish Council joined contractor G F Tomlinson at an event to mark the start of the important new community building, which will provide much-needed community facilities for local sports and recreational groups in the village.
The vibrant new community hub in Scraptoft village off Beeby Road will bring a new hall for activities and events, changing rooms and office space to support the needs of the growing community which has doubled in size.
Peter Elliot, chairman for the Scraptoft Parish Council said the planning and sourcing of funding for the new hub had been years in the making but, thanks to the ongoing support of G F Tomlinson, would soon provide space for a range a community groups and activities for all ages.
“We’re delighted to see this new community hub come into fruition. Our village has an existing hall that was built in the 1920s, but with the number of houses in the area growing we identified a need to provide even more community space for people across the village to enjoy activities,” explained Peter.
“The team at G F Tomlinson has supported us throughout the process, helping us to deliver a hub that will fit into our budget without comprising on the final product. The support from them has been invaluable and without their expertise, the project may not have gone ahead.
“Now that the project has started on site the community will continue to be involved, providing input on what events and activities could take place in the new building. I’m confident the community hub will provide a welcoming space for both old and new residents.”
Craig Stopper, framework manager from G F Tomlinson said: “This is a project we are proud to be involved in which has been led by the community, for the community. We’ve been working with the parish council for a number of months to ensure the building includes all the right facilities, without exceeding the budget.”
The hub has been procured through the East Midlands Property Alliance (empa) framework, which is managed by Scape Group, will be located adjacent to a newly-developed football pitch and is expected to complete in autumn 2017.
Craig added: “The empa framework gives organisations like Scraptoft Parish Council access to expert advice about build projects that wouldn’t be available through the traditional public sector procurement route. We will continue supporting the council throughout the build and will provide opportunities for the community to get involved where possible.”
Ian Towlson, regional frameworks manager for Scape Procure said: “This new hub will provide much-needed community space in the village of Scraptoft. Facilities like this are valuable to growing communities and will provide an ideal space for sports teams, community groups, fitness classes and local events.
“This project is a great example of how our framework helps public sector organisations get projects off the ground with the right level of support from accredited contractors who are committed to delivering high-quality work for local communities.”
Scraptoft Parish Council secured funding from a public works loan and developers in the area before selecting G F Tomlinson as the contractor through the empa framework. The hub has been designed by architects EKV Design.
