Design & Build
This project was procured as a direct award contract through the Scape Framework and involved the demolition of the existing 1930’s fire station, followed by the construction of a new state-of-the-art fire station in the existing footprint of the original station.
Internal accommodation provided garage space for two fire engines, a watch office, Station Manager’s office, training rooms, one-to-one room, a gym recreation room, shower facilities and a kitchen.
The fire station was required to stay operational throughout the construction works. To ensure this was possible temporary accommodation was provided to house a fire station and accommodate the two appliances.
A site specific Traffic Management Plan was established to ensure bluelight vehicles had full priority over site deliveries and site traffic. All deliveries were required to contact the Site Manager ten minutes prior to arrival on site and a dedicated Banksman co-ordinated all vehicle and plant movements.
Regular newsletters were issued to the surrounding residents informing them of the planned works and the construction programme, with the site management teams contact details included for any queries.
Sustainable features for the new building comprise a solar water heating system using solar panels fitted to the roof. Fire safe Kingspan wall panels were insulated to maximise thermal performance, minimise whole life costs and remove the risk of condensation. Low energy boilers were installed to provide a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.
The project was successfully delivered to the strict 30 week programme.
Keith Trowell, Station Manager at Melton Fire Station, said: “The new Melton Fire Station is now fit-for-purpose and has exceeded all our expectations.”
